How to Maintain Your Oral Health

Sure, we all know that we need to brush our teeth at least twice a day, and most of us do. However, brushing once or twice a day isn’t the only thing we can do to keep our mouths healthy. Poor oral health can lead to worse things than just cavities. Tooth rot, infections, and bad breath are all affected by the overall health of your mouth. So, with that said, here’s a list of things you can do to keep your oral health in top shape:

Brush, Floss, and Rinse

These, of course, are the big three of mouth health. Use a soft toothbrush to brush food particles away from your gums, floss to get the stuff out from between your teeth, and rinse after every meal or as often as possible. Make sure you’re bruising away from the gum line, as hard brushing along the gums can cause them to recede and expose the roots of your teeth.

Avoid Sugar as best you can

Sugar is terrible for teeth. It provides a nice fuel for the bacteria in your teeth to form acids in your mouth that lead to plaque, which can lead to tooth decay. Sugary drinks are even worse. They contain phosphoric and citric acids all on its own, which eat away at your tooth enamel, which is the protective layer of your teeth.

Quit Smoking

Not only is smoking linked to many diseases such as cancer and heart disease, but it is also dangerous in terms of your oral health. Nicotine and tar eat away at your gums and introduce bacteria to your mouth that damages everything from your gums to the bone supporting your teeth. This can lead to the loss of teeth as they rot away and to yellow stains as the tar takes its toll. Smoking is the leading cause of oral cancer as well, and it causes bad breath to take hold.

Visit your Dentist

Visiting a dentist regularly is crucial to maintaining good oral health. A dentist can assess your mouth and teeth to check for issues and provide guidance for treating them before they become major problems. The hygienists who work with your dentist can also clean your teeth and gums more thoroughly than you can do by yourself, which gives your mouth a nice clean boost every six months.

Use Mouthwash

Many mouthwashes have very little use other than giving breath a temporary minty taste. Mouthwashes with chlorine dioxide, however, are very effective as they help destroy the bacteria that can cause issues all around your mouth and not just by the teeth. Mouthwash should be used in addition to brushing and flossing, and not on its own. Having a whole clean mouth will help give you nice fresh breath as well. There are several diseases and afflictions that are affected by the health of your mouth. There are the obvious ones like gum disease and cavities, but there are other potentially more serious ones as well. These include heart disease, stroke, and oral cancer among others.
