Immediate dentures are temporary solutions for patients undergoing a tooth extraction.

Instead of leaving a noticeable gap while waiting for the healing process and more permanent solutions like dental implants, temporary dentures maintain your smile and boost your confidence.

If you'd like a tooth replaced with a denture, we can create them before the extraction procedure, allowing for an immediate replacement.

How Much Do Immediate Dentures Cost?

There's no set cost for immediate dentures, as it depends on how many missing teeth we're replacing.

For example, if we're only replacing one tooth, it costs less than replacing multiple teeth or fitting an entire set of immediate dentures.

Your dentist will assess your needs during your consultation and provide a tailored quote.

Benefits Of Immediate Dentures

Immediate Dentures

Dentures

There are many benefits associated with immediate dentures, including their ability to enhance your smile and maintain dental function while your gums heal:

  1. Instant Results: Nobody wants to deal with missing teeth, but immediate dentures can instantly replace any extractions.
  2. Protects Your Gums: You can think of immediate dentures as a protection measure, as they sit in the extraction site, control bleeding, and ensure your gums heal properly.
  3. Aesthetic Appeal: We can create temporary dentures that match your remaining natural teeth, creating a uniform smile.
  4. Dental Function: If you don't have temporary dentures while your mouth heals, you may notice that it's hard to chew with gaps in your mouth. You'll still need to chew soft foods first, but dental function is restored much sooner than if you wait for permanent dentures or implants.
  5. Confidence: If teeth in visible areas are extracted, it can impact your confidence and self-esteem. By using temporary dentures, you can feel confident going out and socialising at your mouth heals.
  6. Preparing For Permanent Solutions: Temporary dentures are ideal for the transitional phase, as they create a stable foundation for your eventual implants.

Immediate Denture Process

StepsDescription
Initial AssessmentDuring your free consultation, we'll discuss your treatment options and explain how immediate dentures work.

Your dentist will also explore other temporary solutions that may provide more stability.

If you'd like to proceed with the treatment, we'll take an impression of your mouth to create the temporary denture.
Tooth ExtractionWe'll perform the procedure on the day of your tooth extraction appointment.

The dentist will remove your tooth, manage the bleeding, and clean the extraction site.

Because the immediate replacement dentures are prepared beforehand, we can insert them on the same day.
Denture PlacementWe'll insert the dentures while your mouth is still numb, as it reduces the risk of them cutting into your gums.

While we create temporary dentures based on impressions of your teeth and mouth, we may still need to make some adjustments on the day to ensure they fit correctly.
Healing ProcessYou may feel discomfort during the healing process, and we recommend eating soft foods for the first few days.

The initial healing involves the extraction sites producing new tissue to cover the holes, while the long-term healing process can take a few months.
Permanent SolutionsOnce your mouth is healed and ready for permanent solutions, we'll take impressions for permanent dentures.

However, we often recommend that our patients explore other options, such as dental implants or bridges, because they offer more stability and comfort.

Commonly Asked Questions

How long do immediate dentures stay in?

Immediate dentures are temporary solutions; you wear them during healing.

In most cases, you wear them for three to four months, although some people may wear them for six months.

Once your mouth is healed, we'll arrange an appointment to fit permanent dentures or implants.

How painful are immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures aren't usually painful, but they can cause some discomfort.

The denture is friction fit in your mouth, which isn't the same as having natural teeth.

Some people notice that the dentures feel bulky and can create sore spots, but this is manageable with pain medication.

What are the disadvantages of immediate dentures?

The disadvantages of immediate dentures include:

  • The Fit Changing: The gums and jawbone can shrink while healing after tooth extraction, making dentures loose. They may require frequent adjustments and realignment.
  • Not a Perfect Fit Initially: As temporary dentures are created before the extraction, your dentist will need to friction-fit them. This can lead to them feeling unstable and bulky initially.
  • Discomfort: During your initial adjustment period, immediate dentures can be uncomfortable and unstable. Denture adhesives can ensure they remain steady in your mouth.
  • Taste and Speech Issues: In the upper jaw, the dentures are held in place by the palate and surrounding teeth. If you have multiple temporary dentures, it can impact your speech and taste.
  • Oral Hygiene Issues: Dentures tend to trap more food and plaque, affecting your oral hygiene. You will need to be diligent about cleaning your teeth and keeping your mouth clean to prevent gum problems or decay.

Can you eat with immediate dentures?

Yes, you can - but starting with soft foods and liquids is essential.

Once you're used to them, you can gradually transition to solid foods by cutting them into small pieces and chewing on both sides.

However, avoiding chewy and sticky foods that may dislodge the denture is best.

Can I sleep with my immediate dentures?

During the first 24 hours, you should sleep with the immediate dentures in, but after that, it's best to remove them.

This ensures your gums and jaw bone can recover from the pressure caused by the dentures.

What is the next step after immediate dentures?

Immediate dentures are a stop-gap while you're healing.

Once the dentist feels you're ready for a more permanent solution, they'll arrange an appointment to discuss your options.

Some people choose permanent dentures, while others prefer the stability of dental implants.

Who is a candidate for immediate dentures?

Ideal candidates for immediate dentures are individuals who require tooth extractions in visible areas and don't want to be without teeth.

However, you'll need to commit to follow-up appointments and prepare for adjustments when necessary.

How long do immediate dentures last?

Immediate dentures aren't intended to be long-term solutions, and they usually last for up to six months.

However, most people will wear them for three to four months.

What is the difference between immediate and permanent dentures?

Immediate dentures are temporary solutions that are placed immediately after tooth extractions to maintain aesthetic appeal and ensure dental function.

However, they loosen over time and require regular readjustments.

Permanent dentures are made and fitted once your jawbone and gums have healed, which means they offer more comfort and last much longer.

Can I leave the immediate denture over the implant for a month?

As long as your dentist is happy that the denture is not applying excess pressure to the implant then this is possible.

The implants must fuse with the jawbone (also known as osseointegration) for three to six months, and during that time we like to minimise the forces applied to the implants to ensure a successful bond.

If you want to wear the denture over your implant, the dentist needs to adjust it to prevent interference with the healing process.

It is also advisable to remove the denture at night to prevent inflammation around the healing implant.
