Why is the Dentist Important?

06 December 2016

It’s easy to forget that your mouth is one of the most important parts of your body and it requires constant care. The state of a person’s oral health can tell a lot about their overall health and well-being. That said; maintaining healthy teeth and gums should be a top priority for everyone.

Not only does this mean brushing and flossing as recommended; it also means scheduling in regular appointments to see your dentist.

Without doing the latter, you’ll be missing out on the benefits of getting a regular professional clean as well as any preventative and maintenance care that you may need.

One of the common questions 3Dental receive is: why is the dentist important for your health?

Why Seeing a Dentist is Important for your Health

A routine dental visit isn’t just about getting your teeth cleaned and polished to keep them looking nice and healthy.

Your dentist will check your mouth, cheeks, gums, teeth and your tongue to ensure that there are no signs of gum disease, tooth decay or anything else that could potentially cause you problems.

If you’re prone to grinding or clenching, your dentist will be able to check all of your old fillings to see do they need to be refilled.

The majority of serious dental problems don’t become apparent or become painful until they’re in their advanced stages so it’s so important to catch them in their early stages.

By scheduling in an appointment to see your dentist at least twice a year, you’ll be able to benefit from all of the above and it will soon become apparent why seeing a dentist is so important.

Why do Dentists Wear Masks?

Dentists wear masks for a variety of reasons, with one of the main ones being to prevent the inhalation of airborne infections particles that can arise from drilling and scaling on teeth.

In addition; as the human mouth is home to a variety of bacteria and a dentist or hygienist is usually in close proximity to patients’ mouths, masks are used as a preventative measure to help limit the chance of passing bacteria back and forth.

Can I go to the dentist without an appointment?

The short answer to this question is yes, but it may not be the most effective course of action.

Even in an emergency, it’s always best to call your dentist ahead of time so they can be better prepared to serve you when you arrive at the clinic/surgery.

How to prepare for your dental visit

Preparing for a visit to the dentist is important because you want the experience to be as stress and pain free as possible. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Get a good night’s sleep
  2. Stay away from drinks that contain sugar and/or caffeine on the day of your appointment
  3. Wear clothes that you’re comfortable in
  4. Brush and floss well before your visit
  5. If you need to eat before your appointment, make it a healthy snack and wash it down with lots of water

If you still fail to realise the importance of seeing a dentist on a regular basis, give us a call and we’d be happy to explain more.
