Gum Disease Treatments
If ignored, an infection can develop into the next stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis. Gingivitis causes bleeding gums, sensitivity when chewing or brushing, and bad breath. At this stage, it’s important to sort the problem by seeing a hygienist and having a full dental clean. If further ignored , the infection can result in a disease known as ‘periodontitis’. Periodontitis causes gums to recede which results in large gaps between teeth, tooth migration, loose teeth and potential tooth loss.

What Happens During Gum Disease Treatment?
The required treatment depends on the health of your gums and the stage of the infection. If minor, the treatment can be carried out by minor adjustments to your daily brushing, flossing and the type of mouthwash you use. Our hygienists can also help to clean the areas of your mouth that you may have missed and will advise you on how to prevent future issues. Gingivitis requires in-depth treatment consisting of scaling and polishing which removes plaque and tartar build-up, as well as general cleaning and the use of special mouthwash that targets the specific bacteria causing the gum disease. This cleaning is generally painless, although sensitivity can be felt if gums are swollen and sore.
On the other hand, periodontitis requires more extensive treatment. This treatment involves more detailed and specialised cleaning carried out after your mouth has been numbed.
