Dental Oral Examination

What Is A Full Oral Examination?

A full oral assessment (or examination) is an assessment of your teeth, jaw and soft tissues (gums, tongue, palate, cheeks, etc.). Your dentist will look for cavities, any issues with your gums and do an oral cancer screening.

It is important to monitor for cavities and catch them early. If left undetected, they can spread to the nerve of your tooth causing a lot of pain and the need for either a root canal treatment or a tooth extraction.

However, if detected early, cavities can be completely prevented or may just require a small filling.

Why Is A Dental Exam Important?

Monitoring the health of your gums is equally as important as checking for cavities. Your gums are what holds your teeth in place, so therefore, if you get gum disease which is not controlled your teeth can become loose.

Gum disease can also cause bad breath, but this can be easily controlled with the right advice and regular visits to the hygienist.

Regular dental flossing can also help to reduce gum disease as it removes plaque from between the teeth and around areas where the toothbrush can’t reach.

Oral Assessment

A full oral assessment will consist of the dentist checking your teeth and gums with a little mouth mirror. The dentist will also check out your soft tissues and jaw.

You may require some X-rays to monitor in between your teeth and under your gums.

It is recommended to see the dentist every 6 months for a full oral assessment.
