What Age Should I Bring My Child To See An Orthodontist?

What Age Should I Bring My Child To See An Orthodontist?

The ideal age to bring your child for an orthodontic consultation is between 8-9 years of age.

At this stage, your orthodontist can advise on the optimal orthodontic treatment for your child to align their bite and straighten their teeth.

Before age 14, a child's bone is softer and more malleable.

A Pre-Appliance

Before age 14, a child's bone is softer and more malleable.

Because of this, your child might need a pre-appliance, or they could need straight forward train track braces when they are a little older.

A 'pre-appliance' is used to move the jaw and guide bone growth before braces. It can also encourage correct jaw alignment before aligning the teeth.

Initial Consultation
Initial Consultation

Initial Consultation

We recommend that you attend the initial consultation with your child.

At the initial consultation we take an xray which will gives a detailed picture of how your child's teeth are developing. This will inform the required level of treatment.

Your orthodontist will then explain the best way forward, answer any questions and will then provide a pricing plan.

Early Orthodontic Development
Early Orthodontic Development

Early Orthodontic Development

When it comes to growth development issues with the jaw, early intervention is the best treatment.

This treatment needs to occur during the developmental years.

If not detected until late teens or early adulthood, the treatment options are limited to surgery.

If detected before a child’s “growth spurt” treatment is as simple as wearing a plate. These can be removable or cemented in place depending on your child’s needs.

Your orthodontist can explain what type of plate is needed and show you examples of these at your consultation.

The Process

The Process

It is recommended that a general dentist monitors a child from an early age for orthodontic treatment.

Some children will have jaw development issues where the jaw does not grow to an ideal position.

Children with this growth development may require early orthodontic intervention from as early as the age of 8.

Commonly Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get braces for a child?

This all depends on how long the braces will be worn and whether a functional (removable) appliance needs to be worn first. Other factors such as extractions can add to costs.

In general, kids braces start at €3,500 for top and bottom jaws.

For more information, view our pricing page. We also offer payment plans for your convenience.

What is a good age to get braces?

We recommend bringing your child in for a consultation at between 8 and 9 years old; in case they need other treatment to guide the growth of the jaw before getting braces.

We generally fit braces between age 12 and 14 or when the baby molars have fallen out.

How long will orthodontic treatment take for my child?

In most cases, your child will be wearing braces for around 2 years. This can vary depending on the case's complexity.

We offer free consultations where one of our orthodontists can give your child a treatment plan with an exact time frame.

What foods should we avoid with braces?

You should avoid any foods that are hard or sticky while wearing braces. Foods like popcorn, nuts, crusty bread, nuts, toffee, chewing gum and hard sweets could damage the braces or cause them to come loose from your tooth.

How regularly will my child need to come in to have their braces adjusted?

You should plan to come in every 4 to 6 weeks for a braces adjustment. Your orthodontist will advise you when to book your next appointment.

What age should my child be for their first orthodontic visit?

In case your child may require early intervention, we recommend bringing children in for an orthodontic consultation between 8 and 9 years old.

How long do the braces stay on?

This depends on the type and severity of the problem being treated. More complex problems generally take more time.

Normally somewhere between 1–2 years will fix the majority of problems.

What can you eat with braces?

You can eat most foods with braces. Good oral hygiene is needed while the braces are on, so we recommend avoiding sugary foods.

You should cut up harder foods such as apples and carrots before eating to avoid breaking the brackets on the teeth. You should avoid sticky foods like toffee altogether.

Are kids braces available near me?

Yes! We provide kids braces in each of our three clinics - Dublin, Limerick and Galway.

Book your free consultation today! We look forward to welcoming you in person soon :)

Are braces suitable for my child?

Not all children can wear braces. Several factors may make this treatment unsuitable for some.

  • Age: once permanent teeth erupt, braces should be considered for kids and teens. Younger children may not be ready. Some children may need pre-orthodontic devices before braces. 8–9-year-olds should receive their first orthodontic consultation.
  • Oral Health: if a child has untreated dental decay or gum disease then braces may not be a good option.
  • Jaw Growth: some jaw or skeletal anomalies may require jaw surgery later in life. In these cases, braces may be unsuitable as a sole treatment.
  • Tooth Development: if a child has missing, impacted, or deformed teeth then braces may not be advisable.
There may be other factors to consider. A dentist must evaluate a child's oral and medical issues before recommending braces.
