Early Orthodontic Development

When it comes to growth development issues with the jaw, early intervention is the best treatment.

This treatment needs to occur during the developmental years.

If not detected until late teens or early adulthood, the treatment options are limited to surgery.

If detected before a child’s “growth spurt” treatment is as simple as wearing a plate. These can be removable or cemented in place depending on your child’s needs.

Your orthodontist can explain what type of plate is needed and show you examples of these at your consultation.

The Process

It is recommended that a general dentist monitors a child from an early age for orthodontic treatment.

Some children will have jaw development issues where the jaw does not grow to an ideal position.

Children with this growth development may require early orthodontic intervention from as early as the age of 8.

Commonly Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get braces for a child?

This all depends on how long the braces will be worn and whether a functional (removable) appliance needs to be worn first. Other factors such as extractions can add to costs.

In general, kids braces start at €3,000 for top and bottom jaws.

What is a good age to get braces?

Once all the adult teeth are present (age 12 or so) your child is ready for braces if needed.

In very severe or complex problems we might look at putting on braces earlier e.g. severe open bite or overjet.

How long will orthodontic treatment take for my child?

This can range from 6 months to over 2 years. It depends on the position of the jaws and the alignment of the teeth. The orthodontist can provide you with a guideline at your free consultation.

What foods should we avoid with braces?

It is advised to avoid hard and sticky foods such as crusty breads, nuts, popcorn and toffee when wearing braces. This is to avoid breaking the brace.

How regularly will my child need to come in to have their braces adjusted?

You will need to bring your child in every 4-6 weeks for their braces to be adjusted.

What age should my child be for their first orthodontic visit?

Ideally you should bring your child in for their first orthodontic visit from 8 years old. This is so the orthodontist can monitor the growth and position of the jaws. Early intervention may be required.

How long do the braces stay on for?

Again this depends on the type and severity of the problem being treated. More complex problems generally take more time.

Normally somewhere between 1 – 2 years will fix the majority of problems.

What can you eat with braces?

You can eat most foods with braces. As we require good oral hygiene while braces are on we recommend you avoid sugary foods except as occasional treats.

Foods such as apples and carrots should be cut up before eating to avoid breaking the brackets on the teeth. Sticky foods e.g. toffee should be avoided completely.
