Dr. Niall Vallely Explains The Routine Checkup Procedure At 3Dental
Routine dental checkups (also referred to as dental examinations) are important because not only do they give you the peace of mind that all is well in your mouth but also help nip any potential dental problems in the bud.
Long term this not only reduces the need for longer more difficult dental procedures but will also help save you money on future dental treatments.
In some cases we will recommend patients have their teeth cleaned after a checkup.
)
A Detailed Dental Checkup
)
Our dentists undertake a detailed examination of your dental health including checking for cavities.
This is done using a wide variety of advanced equipment. We will discuss any potential issues that we find with you.
It is very important to maintain regular visits to the dentist to avoid major problems and to maintain your oral health.

Benefits of Routine Dental Checkups
Detecting Dental Health Issues Early:
When you schedule regular dental check-ups, it lets the dentist assess your oral health and identify issues early on.
This reduces the need for emergency dental care and can prevent minor tooth decay or gum disease from worsening.
Assessing Previous Treatments:
If you've had emergency treatment in the past, like dental surgery, we can assess your recovery and see whether further treatment is needed.
If you wear braces, the dentist will also check if the teeth are in their desired position.
Looking Beneath the Surface:
While visual checks assess your teeth and the surrounding gums, the dentist may also take X-rays, which enable them to identify hidden issues that aren't noticeable during a traditional routine exam.
Personalised Advice:
Dentists can assess your oral health and provide advice to enhance it.
For example, they may recommend specific products, teach you proper brushing techniques, and help you understand oral hygiene practices to prevent tooth decay and other issues.
Professional Cleaning:
Routine check-ups are also an opportunity for your dentist to see whether you'd benefit from a professional cleaning.
They'll refer you to a dental hygienist who will perform a complete cleaning, scale, and polish, rejuvenating your smile.
Oral Cancer Screening:
Seeking routine dental treatment can also enhance your overall health, as the dentist will perform a full check for oral cancer, enabling them to identify any risk factors.
Advanced oral cancer can spread to the lymph nodes and distant organs, making it much harder to treat.
Confidence:
Our dental services are here to not only address any issues, but also ensure you feel confident.
We all want a perfect smile, and regular examinations can boost your self-esteem.
Overcoming Dental Phobias:
Many people experience dental phobias, but attending regular dental check-ups can help you overcome your fear and make any future visits more comfortable.

Initial Assessment
When you arrive at the clinic, you'll be asked to fill out a medical history form.
This helps your dentist understand any conditions or medications affecting your treatment.
It's important to give as much detail as possible so we can plan your care safely and effectively.
Your dentist will begin by discussing any concerns you may have about your teeth, gums, and general oral health.
This ensures we fully understand your needs before starting the examination.
Your dentist will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, checking for any potential issues and making sure there are no signs of underlying problems.
This involves the use of standard dental instruments, but the exam is gentle, non-invasive, and involves no needles or drilling.
If necessary, we’ll also take X-rays to get a clearer view and help us make informed decisions about your care.
)
Outcomes/Further Treatments
Your dentist will explain their findings and advise you on what, if anything, needs to happen next.
This might include a follow-up appointment, further investigation, or simply continuing with your regular check-ups.
If treatment is recommended, we’ll talk you through your options and answer any questions you may have.
We may also clean your teeth, using tools to remove plaque and tartar, then polish them.
)
Aftercare
Your dentist will advise on proper teeth cleaning habits, discuss whether certain oral hygiene products would be beneficial, and offer other recommendations tailored to your unique needs.
We'll also schedule a follow-up appointment if needed.
While most people only need annual dental examinations, we may recommend that you see a dental professional sooner if there are any issues.

Once a dental check-up is finished, your dentist will discuss any dental problems and advise further treatments if necessary.
You'll also receive customised recommendations to ensure good oral health and prevent dental issues in the future.
The dentist will create a tailored treatment plan if you require further diagnostic procedures for cavities, orthodontic issues, and anything else.
However, if there are no issues, your dentist will tell you when your next appointment should be and will send a reminder when it's time to book.

Commonly Asked Questions
How often should I see a dentist for a checkup?
It is recommended to visit a dentist for a checkup every 6 months, and no less than once a year at a minimum.
This allows the dentist to identify any problems and prevent future problems from happening!
Is dental check ups covered by insurance?
It depends on the insurance policy you have. You will need to check with your insurance company.
How long does a routine dental check-up appointment take?
A routine check-up is usually over within about 10 minutes. Usually, we will look at your teeth and gums to look for signs of decay or infection.
We often will take an x-ray or two to look more closely. It won’t hurt, and afterwards, the dentist will wait to talk to you about any treatment you may need.
Can bad teeth be fixed?
It’s our job as dentists to try to fix bad teeth. We always want to save teeth and usually we can. We can repair decay (fillings), gum disease (hygiene), nerve damage (root canals) or crooked teeth (braces).
Sometimes a very broken down tooth is beyond repair. But in these cases after an extraction, we can often put in an implant.
Is dental teeth cleaning necessary?
Yes, it’s very important. Our hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums. This not only makes your mouth feel fresher but helps prevent tooth decay and gum problems (periodontal disease) which can lead to tooth loss.
Normally, we recommend a cleaning twice a year.
Can I get a routine dental checkup near me?
Yes! We provide routine dental checkups in each of our clinics - Dublin (Red Cow), Dublin (Aungier Street), Limerick and Galway.
We look forward to welcoming you in person soon :)
