Why Are Routine Dental Checkups Important?

Routine dental checkups are important because not only do they give you the peace of mind that all is well in your mouth but also help nip any potential dental problems in the bud. Long term this not only reduces the need for longer more difficult dental procedures but will also help save you money on future dental treatments.
A regular 6 month cleaning is extremely important and often times we have patients on shorter recalls than 6 months. The health of your gums is as important as your actual teeth.

A Detailed Dental Hygiene Examination

Our dentists undertake a detailed examination of your dental health and hygiene status using a wide variety of advanced equipment and will discuss any potential issues with you.
We are happy to discuss any issues or concerns you may have, and will work closely with you to find the right solutions for your needs.

Quality Dental Hygiene
Our hygienists use effective cleaning techniques that remove tartar and plaque, including scaling and polishing for both normal and sensitive teeth.
They pay particular attention to staining from tea, coffee, wine, and smoking. We can also offer gentle air abrasion of teeth to bring the colour up to their very whitest.
In addition, we will be able to advise you how to clean your teeth effectively, preventing any future dental complications.
In the video in this panel, Ailbhe O'Sullivan explains what a dental hygienist does in detail.

Brushing Your Teeth
Ailbhe advises that everybody brushes their teeth, twice a day for 2 minutes.
Preferably using soft bristles. This is because your less likely to do any damage to the gums with soft bristles.
You should use about a pea sized amount of toothpaste.
The best technique to brush your teeth is called 'modified bass' technique. Ailbhe explains how this works in the video in this panel.

Commonly Asked Questions
How often should I see a dentist?
It is recommended to visit a dentist for a checkup every 6 months, and no less than once a year at a minimum.
This allows the dentist to identify any problems and prevent future problems from happening!
What happens at a dentist check up?
The dentist will do a detailed exam to make sure everything is ok with your teeth and the other structures in your mouth.
It is very important to maintain regular visits to the dentist to avoid major problems and to maintain your oral health.
How much does a dental check up cost?
At 3Dental, a general checkup is €40.
Is dental check ups covered by insurance?
It depends on the insurance policy you have. You will need to check with your insurance company.
How long does a routine dental check-up appointment take?
A routine check-up is usually over within about 10 minutes. Usually, we will look at your teeth and gums to look for signs of decay or infection.
We often will take an x-ray or two to look more closely. It won’t hurt, and afterwards, the dentist will wait to talk to you about any treatment you may need.
Can bad teeth be fixed?
It’s our job as dentists to try to fix bad teeth. We always want to save teeth and usually we can. We can repair decay (fillings), gum disease (hygiene), nerve damage (root canals) or crooked teeth (braces).
Sometimes a very broken down tooth is beyond repair. But in these cases after an extraction, we can often put in an implant.
Is dental teeth cleaning necessary?
Yes, it’s very important. Our hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums. This not only makes your mouth feel fresher but helps prevent tooth decay and gum problems (periodontal disease) which can lead to tooth loss.
Normally, we recommend a cleaning twice a year.
